Being in my 20’s I have grown up with the internet and have developed a strong online profile over a number of platforms.
Recently I have started a new unit at University on Digital Media. This unit has really made me think about what it means to have online profiles and how they should be used in the modern day, whether that’s for professional or personal uses.
Here is my list of 5 tips on how to use digital media for the modern gentleman or lady.
- Keep all your profiles updated: This is very important on platforms like Linkedin where having a solid online profile can mean the difference between getting a job or not.
- Be active: having active profiles means more than just keeping you friends in the loop it also shows that you have the skills and ability to stay up to date with current technology trends that could help you get that job. Also if you have social media you might as well use it.
- Keep a level privacy: No self-respecting gentleman or woman should be posting everything they do. Having an air of mystery around you is not a bad thing in today’s society and can keep you safe.
- Keep the hashtags to a minimum: Unless you are trying to run a business or build a name on Instagram then you friends don’t really need to see 20 plus hashtags on your posts
- Remember that once its online it never truely goes away: Be mindful of what you post and always think about what a potential employer might think if they see it
So those are some of my top tips for using social media as a modern day gentleman or lady. So go out and be social!
The very basic guide to introducing more nutrients into your life.
Step 1: Pick the fruit you like the most! This is fruit 1, I chose the Banana because its quick to eat, tastes great and can be used in smoothies easily.
Buy this fruit every week and always have enough to eat one a day.
Step 2: Chose a different fruit, it might be the first one you see when you go to the supermarket or it could be on sale. This is fruit 2. Again buy enough so you can eat it once a day.
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 but change fruit 2 every week so you are constantly introducing variety into your diet.
- Add more fruit! If you like fruit a lot, well just add some more of it
- Change up fruit 1 as well. I only keep fruit 1 the same because I use it in my smoothies but you can change it every week if you want!
End goal is to eat more fruit and have a more varied diet!

The desire to continually move forward is a powerfully one, it’s what has pushed the human race to the point it is today. No matter the obstacles our human race continues to push the boundaries. Despite this sometimes it just seems like your life is standing still. So today I going to discuss how to keep life moving and breaking boundaries.
Having recently finished Mark Manson’s book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” I have picked up two useful take always on how to keep moving forward. This is only a part of everything I took away from this book and can give this book a huge recommend as its easily one of my favourite books.
The first take away and a pretty obvious one at that is to just work! Despite this being incredibly obvious it’s something that people often fail to do when stuck in a rut. We often wonder how to do something and just can’t work out how to do it, when in reality you just have to do! The art of action is possibly the most important skill anyone can learn because the only way to do something is to start!
But what happens if I don’t know how to start or I don’t know what I’m doing? Well this is my second take away from the book which is that nobody knows what they are actually doing. This is something I have very much realised since becoming what people would call an ‘adult’. As a child you get this sense that your parents and adults around them all have it figured out and know what to do in every situation. Then you grow up and realise this is not true at all, no one actually knows what the hell they are doing. Yes, they may have some more experience in some areas but in reality that only makes it slightly easier and you just have to wing it!
So get out there and start taking action, put in the work whether you know what you are doing or not. Experiment, try new things, put in the work and you’ll soon be moving forward again towards bigger and better things.
Reading books is one of my favourite activities I have introduced into my life again. I have always read books but up until last year I was never a consistent reader. 2016 I successfully completed my goal of reading 10 books and this is a list of my favourite 5.
The Four Hour Body by Tim Ferris
Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live – Jim Rohn. This quote is so important today with our ever sedentary world and diets of fast food. Instead of just feeding our bodies with real food we have to make the choice of looking after our bodies breaking away from the norm. This is ever more important while you’re in your twenties as it is the perfect time to start feeding you body with proper food and growing the muscle we are designed to have, so that you lay down the foundation for the rest of you life. The Four Hour Body discusses ideas on diet to exercise to even sex, this book is a great starting point to improving your health.
Games Without Rules: The often interrupted history of Afghanistan – Mir Tamim Ansary
Games Without Rules is a great book that brings the key parts of Afghanistan’s history together to highlight and discuss the many issues that are currently faced in Afghanistan. With so much of the worlds western countries military resources going into the region its useful to learn about why and how history has led us to this point.
Zero To One – Peter Thiel
Whether or not you are looking to become an entrepreneur or not this book discusses how to build ideas and explains many fundamentals of business.
What went wrong? Western impact and middle eastern response – Bernard Lewis
What went wrong? covers the history of the middle east and islam and how the impact of the west and their own decisions have lead to the current issues we have in the world. This book is excellent at putting into perspective the problems in the world and how they are very much not a new problem.
Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill
The brain is more powerfully then many people are lead to believe. Think and Grow Rich covers the 13 techniques on how to lead a successful life all by using you thoughts and some action. The 13 steps of Desire, Faith, Autosuggestion, Specialised Knowledge, Imagination, Organised Planning, Decision, Persistence, Power of the Master Mind, The Mystery of Sex Transmutation, The Subconscious Mind, The Brain and The Sixth Sense are all very useful and can be used throughout life.
Reading is one of the most useful things we can do and I therefore challenge you guys to try and read 5 more books in 2017 than you did in 2016.
Here is my list actions that I am trying to follow on my way to be a modern gentleman, I have not succeed at all of these but are all things I plan to work on and develop over my life.
- Put your phone away, Facebook isn’t going anywhere but maybe your date is!
- Hold the door open and walk on the outside of the footpath
- Buy clothes that are stylish not fashionable, Style last forever but fashion changes weekly
- Set Goals
- Cook your own food
- Eat real food
- Say “Thanks You”
- Give more then you take – George Bernard Shaw said a gentleman always “puts more into the world than he takes out”
- Live bellow your means
- Read more books
- Spend more time outside
- Treat women with the highest level of respect
- Listen more, Speak less
- Travel often
- Get your sleep
- Be on time
- Say “Yes” but know when to say “No”
- Have a creative outlet
- Don’t watch porn
- Learn constantly
- Improve the lives of those around you
- Work hard
- Don’t judge people
- Develop confidence but stay humble
- Put effort into your appearance
- Challenge yourself
- Respect everyone until they give you a reason to not
- Take Action
Now you may have just read this list and got that good feeling like you have done something towards making yourself a better man. But know reading is only the first step, action must follow! I therefore challenge you to pick five items from the list and aim to improve on that in the next month. Set a reminder on your phone to remind you at the start of the each day and try to improve from one day to then next. You could even journal about it, tracking your improvement in even more detail. The main thing I want you to take away from this is to define your areas of improvement and to take action on improving your life.
